    Masterclass by NORMAN CHERRY

    Norman Cherry

Norman Cherry was formerly Pro Vice Chancellor and Head of the College of Arts at the University of Lincoln. Currently he practises as an independent artist, curator, and consultant. An internationally recognised expert in the field of jewellery, prior to his appointment at Lincoln in 2008, he was Head of the renowned Birmingham School of Jewellery. His work has been exhibited extensively internationally and many of his pieces are held in private and public collections throughout the world. One of his medals is held by the British Museum in their Contemporary Collection. He is a regular speaker at national and international conferences and has undertaken consultancies in several countries, including Brazil, South Africa, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, and Jordan. He is also a Visiting Professor at Nanjing University of The Arts and a special consulting Professor at Shanghai University. His curation projects have included several international exhibitions, most notably “Transplantation: a Sense of Place and Culture”, a significant exhibition of work by Australian and British jewellery artists. He has a particular interest in how artists and designers think and act, especially how creativity is informed by drawing and the haptic process: the way our brains react to materials and their unique properties. His book “Jewellery Design and Development: from concept to object”, published by Bloomsbury in 2013, examines the creative processes of several international jewellery artists as they record specific projects from ideas generation through to completed objects.

Telling a story through jewellery and object

Norman Cherry自己策划的展览“Transplantation: a Sense of Place and Culture”,邀请了来自英国和澳大利亚的12位当代首饰艺术家。

Transplantation: A Sense Of Place And Culture is an exhibition of 12 contemporary jewellery artists from the United Kingdom and Australia, curated by Professor Norman Cherry. There is a shared history between these nations, which is made evident through the artists’ exploration into their own experiences of cultural, ancestral and artistic transplantation.  Anna Davern and Roseanne Bartley are two invited artists in the exhibition. Now we are going to see what Narrative Jewellery means for them.

Anna Davern

Anna Davern often investigates the idea of ‘Australian-ness’ with a fittingly cheeky sense of humour and resourcefulness. Her work refers to the issues of colonisation. She has collaged images from old biscuit and confectionary tins, contributing to the historical element of the work. There is a story in the recycled tin, which highlights the British cultural intrusion onto Australia; the recycled tin playfully hinting the British pastime of enjoying tea and biscuits.

Seeding the Cloud - a walking work in process

    2010

    plastic, wood, silk

Roseanne Bartley

Roseanne Bartley's  jewellery is produced from materials left behind, discarded and dismantled. Her method of collecting is a process called surface archaeology, a method that enables her to observe, survey and gather material from sites in her neighbourhood. The materials Roseanne collects reveal aspects that are unique about a place or a person.

    Masterclass by Norman Cherry:

Constructing a Narrative: Telling a Story Through Jewellery and Object

    First Day:
Morning: Participants have the option to visit the exhibition 'Asymmetric Archaeology: Gazing Machines' by Quayola at HOW Museum. There’s no entrance fee for our masterclass participants so we urge you to take the chance to see this inspiring display.
13:00: At HOW Museum Professor Norman will give an overview of the masterclass and talk about some of his works to the participants.
14:30: We will attend a seminar at HOW Museum, where Professor Norman will join other recognized speakers from various disciplines to discuss about “Narrative”. After the seminar there will be a book signing session where participants could win the signed book “Jewellery Design and Development: from concept to object” by Professor Norman.

    Second Day
Morning: We will walk the city of Shanghai with Professor Norman. Along the way participants can document or collect anything that interest them.
Afternoon: We will start a creativity session, where participants will transform the materials collected in the morning to interesting stories with their imagination.

    Third Day
In the studio we will help participants to employ techniques to turn the stories into design. Participants will be able to bestow new meanings to an item or a concept through the process of “recycling” and more. It is possible that elements be extracted and purified to become the participant’s signature design.

    Fourth Day
Participants will have the option to turn their design into real piece of work. Our goldsmith tutors at AIVA will provide technical supports, so it is possible for participants with no background in craft to make a real piece of jewellery/object that’s designed by themselves.

We will examine how a narrative can be constructed, how our imagination can give new life and real or invented histories to what might appear to others as just everyday disposable objects. By the end of the Masterclass, participants should feel confident in their individual abilities to generate ideas, develop narrative themes, and translate these into items of jewellery or small objects which can tell their own stories and engage an interested public.
