This workshop is aimed at students at CEFR B2 level or higher, who are preparing for IELTS, TOEFL or pre-third level. By the end of the workshop, students will be prepared to write concise, clear and grammatically correct essays that are relevant to the assigned question.

Introduction. Lessons 1-3: Basic Writing Skills review

AIM: Students will review basic essay writing skills, with focus on the following:

lTypes of sentences and sentence structures (imperative, declarative, interrogative and exclamatory)

lSimple sentences, compound sentences, and how to use them

lSentence fragments, comma splices and run-on sentences: what they are, and how to avoid them

Saturday – PM

Advanced Written English 101

In this session, we will look at how you can:

lInterpret essays in terms of topic and form

lOrganize your essays in an appropriate way

lUse writing techniques that are effective and appropriate

lPrepare essays so they can be submitted for evaluation

Sunday – AM

Slow Writing

This lesson is a series of exercises intended to help you begin writing your essays, with a strong emphasis on writing technique.

Using THE

‘The’ is often a difficult word for Chinese students to use accurately. This lesson aims at helping students to use this small but powerful word effectively

Parallel Structures

This is a simple but effective writing technique that allows the writer to construct effective and complex sentences that are grammatically correct

Sample Essay

In this module we will look at a sample essay: how to understand the question, how to prepare your response, and how to write an effective answer that will give you the highest score possible.

Chinglish Pitfalls

In this module, we will look at 20 very common mistakes that are commonly made by Chinese students.
